Getting EV Product Videos Right: Review Workflow for Technically Complex Vehicles

EV product video review workflow requires more technical sign-off than a standard vehicle launch. Here is how to structure approval rounds that catch errors before air.

Electric vehicles are genuinely more technically complex to market than ICE vehicles. The range claims, charging specs, efficiency figures, software features, and safety certifications all carry legal and regulatory weight. When you make a product video about an EV, you are not just showing a car driving on a coastal road. You are making specific, verifiable claims about technology that regulators and consumers will hold you to.

This means the EV product video review workflow has to be tighter than what most automotive marketing teams are used to. The people who need to sign off are not just brand creative and legal. You also need product engineering, the software team (if the video covers over-the-air update features or in-car tech), and sometimes a regulatory affairs contact. Getting all of those people to review a video efficiently, without creating chaos, is the actual challenge.

What Makes EV Video Review Different

Let me be specific about the technical claims that create approval complexity in EV product videos.

Range claims are the most sensitive. EPA-rated range, real-world range under certain conditions, and range in cold weather all mean different things, and mixing them up in a video is a compliance problem. If your video shows a specific range number, that number needs to be confirmed by whoever owns the regulatory data at your company.

Charging speed claims follow a similar pattern. DC fast charging speeds at a particular SoC level, home charging rates, and network-specific speeds are all different numbers. Using the peak number when the video context implies typical conditions is the kind of error that triggers formal corrections.

Software and feature availability is where OEM product teams often catch issues. A feature shown in the video may not be available in all markets, may require an over-the-air update that has not shipped, or may be a future capability that cannot legally be shown as current.

Safety ratings have specific citation requirements. If the video references a safety rating, the language around it needs to match the exact approved phrasing from the rating body.

None of these issues are hard to catch if the right people review the video. The problem is that in most organizations, these reviewers are not part of the default marketing review loop, and they are not used to reviewing video content.

Technical accuracy is a legal exposure, not just a creative preference

One wrong range number in a product video can create regulatory problems that far outweigh the cost of an extra review round.

Structuring the Review Chain for EV Product Videos

Here is how I would set up the review chain for an EV product video.

Stage 1: Creative and script review (before any footage is shot). The biggest efficiency gain in EV product video production is catching technical errors at the script stage, not the edit stage. Before you shoot anything, get product engineering and regulatory affairs to review the script for every factual claim. Mark every claim that requires a specific approval: range numbers, charging speeds, feature availability statements, safety language.

Stage 2: Rough cut review with the product team. Once you have a rough cut, the product team reviews specifically for technical accuracy. They are not looking at color, pacing, or music. They are looking at whether the UI shown on the screen matches the current software version, whether the charging animation shows the right kind of connector, whether the range figure displayed matches the approved market-specific number.

Stage 3: Legal and compliance review. Legal sees the cut after the product team has cleared it. They check that claims are properly disclosured, that comparative claims (if any) meet the applicable standards, and that any certification language is correctly cited.

Stage 4: Brand and regional review. The creative execution is reviewed last. By this point, the factual content is locked. Brand and regional teams review tone, visual consistency, and market-specific adaptations.

The product engineer who needs to confirm your charging speed claim does not watch videos for a living. They do not want to download a file, find the right moment, and write an email referencing a timestamp they are not sure about. If the review process requires technical skills to participate, you will get vague notes or no notes at all, and the video will ship with errors.
