10 Rules for Giving Creative Feedback That Editors Trust

Vague notes wreck good edits and burn days. Here are 10 rules for giving creative feedback that lands, plus the review setup that makes every note count.

I have watched a 30 second cut go through nine rounds of revisions. Not because the editor was bad. Because the feedback was garbage. "Make it pop." "Feels off around the middle." "Can we try something different?" None of that is feedback. It is noise wearing a deadline.

Good creative feedback is a skill, and almost nobody trains for it. We train editors. We train designers. We let clients and stakeholders fire off notes from their phone at midnight and then act surprised when the edit drifts. So here are the 10 rules I give every team I work with. They are opinionated. They work. And at the end I will show you the review setup that makes them stick.

Why most feedback fails before anyone reads it

The problem is rarely the taste. It is the format. A note like "the intro drags" forces the editor to guess. Drags where? The first three seconds? The b-roll? The music bed? By the time they guess wrong twice, you have burned a day and the relationship is a little more tense than it was yesterday.

The fix is precision. Every note should be tied to a moment, a reason, and ideally a direction. When feedback is attached to the exact frame it refers to, the guessing stops. That is the whole game.

A note without a timestamp is just an opinion shouting into a dark room.

The 10 rules I give every reviewer

These are in rough order of impact. If you only adopt three, take 1, 4, and 9.

Let me expand the ones people get wrong most.

Tie every note to an exact timestamp. "At 0:14 the cut feels abrupt" beats "the transitions are choppy" every single time. The editor jumps straight to the frame. No hunting.

Say what is wrong and why. "The logo lingers too long, it kills the pace" tells the editor the goal is pace, so they can solve it their own way. "Cut the logo" just makes them a pair of hands.

Separate must fix from nice to have. If everything is urgent, nothing is. Tag the three things that block approval and let the rest be optional. Your editor will love you.

Give direction, not just diagnosis. You do not have to write the fix. But "I want this to feel calmer here" is a direction. "I do not like it" is a dead end.

Comment on the cut, not the person. "This section loses me" lands. "You always overcut" starts a fight. Creative work is personal enough without the editorializing.

A framework for the note itself: Point, Reason, Direction

When I am unsure how to phrase something, I run it through three questions. I call it PRD, and it fits in one sentence.

1Point: name the exact moment, with a timestamp
2Reason: say what is not working and why it matters
3Direction: suggest where to take it, without dictating the fix

So instead of "the ending is weak," you get: "At 0:48 the music drops out before the logo, it leaves the ending feeling unfinished, can we let the track ride two seconds longer." Point, reason, direction. The editor knows exactly what you saw, what bothered you, and roughly where to go. One sentence. Zero guessing.

Run every note through PRD for a week and watch your revision rounds drop.

The setup that makes good feedback actually possible

Here is the contrarian part. You can memorize all 10 rules and still produce chaos if your tools fight you. Most teams review video over email, WeTransfer, Google Drive, or Dropbox. Those are file transfer tools. They move bytes. They were never built for review. So your perfectly worded note ends up in an email thread, detached from the frame it describes, three replies deep, on a version nobody is sure is current.

Tie every note to a moment, say what is wrong and why, separate the urgent from the optional, and give direction instead of just a verdict.
