Reviewing Voiceover Narration Timing Against Slides Before You Lock a Course Module
Why course producers need a frame-accurate timing pass to catch narration and slide drift before locking a module for captions and translation.
A narrator says "as you can see in this next example" and the slide it is referring to shows up two full seconds later, which is barely noticeable when you are half listening but becomes a genuine credibility problem once a learner is watching closely, clicking back, and wondering whether the course was actually put together carefully. Timing drift like that is one of the most common reasons a course module has to get reopened after it was supposedly locked, and it is almost always caught too late, right after captions have already been generated and the export has already gone out to the learning management system.
Why Timing Drift Happens Even on Well Produced Courses
Voiceover and slides rarely get built by the same person at the same time. A script gets written, a narrator records separately (sometimes weeks later, sometimes by a different voice talent than the last module), and an instructional designer or motion editor builds the slide deck and animation timing against an earlier draft of that script. By the time all three pieces get assembled into one timeline, small mismatches have crept in everywhere: a sentence got trimmed during recording but the slide transition still waits for the original longer phrasing, or an animation was built to land on a beat that got cut from the final voiceover entirely. None of this is anyone's fault exactly, it is just what happens when audio, visuals, and script live in three different files until late in the process.
A typical example looks something like this: a fourteen minute compliance module has its script finalized on a Tuesday, the narrator records on Thursday from a home studio and naturally speeds up slightly through the back half of the read the way most voice talent does once they find their rhythm, and the motion editor building slide timing on Friday is still working off the Tuesday script's estimated pacing rather than the actual Thursday recording. By minute nine, the narrator is running roughly four seconds ahead of where the editor assumed she would be, and every animated callout after that point lands just late enough to feel slightly off without any single cue being wrong on its own.
What Actually Needs Checking Before You Lock a Module
Locking a module means you are treating the audio and visual timing as final, which means captions get generated against that exact cut, translations get sent out for dubbing against that exact cut, and any change after that point means redoing caption sync and possibly re ordering a translation job that is already in progress somewhere else. This is why the check has to happen before lock, not after, and it needs to cover more than just "does the audio sound right."

- Do animated callouts appear exactly when the narrator references them, not before or after
- Are there dead air gaps where a slide sits static waiting on narration that already finished
- Does a corrected or re recorded line still match the surrounding slide timing
- Do transitions between segments feel like one continuous piece rather than three stitched files
Reviewing Timing Is a Frame Level Problem, Not a General Impression
The trouble with reviewing narration timing the old way, watching the whole module start to finish and jotting general notes, is that drift is often small enough to slip past a casual watch but large enough to bother a learner who is actually paying attention and taking notes. A course producer needs to be able to scrub to the exact frame where the narrator says "notice this chart" and confirm the chart is actually visible at that frame, not two seconds later, and that kind of precision review basically requires frame accurate tools rather than a general "watch it through once" pass.

Once a module is locked and captions are generated, a timing fix is no longer a small adjustment, it is a cascading one. Captions are timed against the locked cut, so moving a slide cue means re-syncing captions around it. If the course is also going out in multiple languages, the problem compounds again, because a dub team working from the original timing will bake the same drift into every language version, and by the time anyone notices, you are not fixing one module, you are fixing the module in five languages simultaneously. Who Should Actually Own the Timing Review
In a lot of course teams, timing review falls into a gap between the instructional designer, who cares about pedagogical flow, and the video editor, who cares about the cut being technically clean, and neither one always catches every drift because neither one is exclusively watching for it. The teams that do this well assign one specific person, often a production coordinator or the lead editor, to own a frame by frame timing pass as a named step in the checklist, not an assumed side effect of general review. That person needs a tool that lets them scrub precisely, drop a comment pinned to the exact frame where a cue is off, and confirm the fix once it lands, rather than a general media player with a scrub bar and no way to leave a note anyone else can act on.

Re-recorded Lines Are Where Drift Sneaks Back In
Even a module that passed its timing review clean the first time can drift again the moment a single line gets re-recorded, whether that is because a stat changed, a legal reviewer flagged a phrase, or the narrator simply flubbed a word and needed a pickup. A re-recorded line almost never runs the exact same length as the original, even when the wording is nearly identical, because pacing and breath placement shift slightly every time someone reads a line into a microphone. That small difference, half a second shorter or a full second longer, is enough to push every subsequent slide cue in that segment out of alignment, and it is exactly the kind of change that slips through if the only check is "does the new line sound right," rather than "does the new line still land on the same visual cues the old one did." Any module that has had even one line re-recorded after its first timing pass deserves a second, targeted pass over just that segment before it goes back into the lock queue.
When the Narrator and the Slide Deck Were Never Built Against the Same Draft
A less obvious version of this problem shows up when the script itself went through revisions after recording had already started, which happens constantly on longer courses where a subject matter expert is still tightening wording while narration is underway module by module. If the narrator recorded module six against script draft four but the slide deck for module six was built against script draft five because that's the version that happened to be open on the designer's screen that week, the two pieces were never actually in sync to begin with, and no amount of careful cue placement fixes a mismatch that started upstream. The fix here is less about the timing pass itself and more about a production discipline: locking the script version before recording starts and treating any post-recording script edit as a trigger for a fresh timing check, rather than assuming a small wording tweak couldn't possibly affect anything downstream.
